Reading Notes: Indian Fables and Folklore
The Moon in the Well
- once, a troop of monkeys raided fruit trees in an orchard by moonlight
- one night, the moon disappeared behind some clouds
- the monkeys thought she was lost and began to look for her
- when they looked in a well they saw the reflection of the moon in the bottom
- they wanted to rescue her, so they made a ladder hanging on to each other to get to the bottom of the well
- the branch that was supporting them broke and all of the monkeys fell to the bottom of the well
- basically, monkeys are dumb
