- some people were steaming peas under a tree for dinner
- there was a monkey in the tree watching them
- monkey planned to steal the peas when they walked away
- when they finished steaming the peas they turned to look after the horses
- the monkey came down and stole all the peas
- he stuffed as many as he could in his mouth and hands and went back up the tree
- he dropped a single pea on accident
- he was in distress about losing the one pea and other peas began to fall out his mouth and hands but didn't notice because he was so worried about the one pea that fell first
- he decided to go back down and get it but the men came back and saw the monkey and shooed him away
- the monkey was so scared he jumped back up the tree
- then he realized that he lost all the other peas too
