Week 5 Story: Chad and Katie

Growing up, Chad had it pretty good. As much as he hated to admit it, being the son of an A-List actor in Hollywood definitely had it's advantages. Just about anyone was more than willing to wait on he and his family hand and foot, offer them extravagant gifts, and present he and his brothers opportunities that they probably wouldn't have been able to get otherwise.

However, Chad was different from his brothers. He strove to be successful without his dad's help. He worked hard in to be quarterback of the football team, and he worked twice as hard in school to be able to go to the college of his dreams- Stanford. Not only did Chad get a football scholarship, he got an academic one too, and he was proud of himself for being independent and not relying on his dad's money to do whatever he wanted.

When the time finally came to move up to school, Chad was elated. It was a long drive, but upon arriving, he was in awe at the beauty of the campus. The buildings stood tall, the grass was beautifully green, and he swore he could smell the ocean in the cool breeze that swept across his face. It was obvious that there was a lot of hard work and money put into the campus, and he was proud to call it his new home.

Because it was the first day, there were people everywhere. Freshman moving into the dorms, RA's telling them where to go, and staff running around to make sure everything was going smoothly. Chad was navigating his way through campus to his dorm when he saw a group of girls sitting on the lawn together. It took him but two seconds to realize that one of them was the Dean's daughter, Katie. He met Katie through some mutual friends during his visit here during summer and had a huge crush on her. He wanted so badly to date her, but he needed to get her dad's approval. In the meantime, Chad wanted to be friends with her.

He knew he needed to prove himself, so Chad decided to become a star student. He worked hard all semester to get a 4.0 on top of his position on the football team, and he was involved in two different clubs on campus. During all of this, Chad worked hard to become best friends with Katie, which was much easier than he could have ever expected. Their personalities meshed perfectly and he couldn't imagine ever spending a day without her. When Katie invited Chad and some other friends to dinner at her house at the end of the semester, Chad knew he was ready to get her dad's approval.

The dinner went wonderfully. Chad made an incredible impression on Katie's dad, even pulling him aside after dinner to suggest taking Katie out on a date. He was trying to keep it cool, but couldn't help but smile ear to ear. He promised her dad that he wouldn't disappoint him, and left the house feeling more accomplished than ever.

The two had plans to go to lunch the next day, and when Chad asked her out, Katie's smile grew bigger than he had ever seen it before. He automatically knew that the feelings he had for her were reciprocated, and a wave of relief rushed through him. "This is the girl I'm going to marry" he thought to himself.

And he did. Chad and Katie dated through the rest of college, and the summer after graduating, Chad proposed to her. He took her on a trip to Big Sur, their favorite place to go camping, and told her that he loved her from the minute he met her and couldn't imagine living the rest of his life without her. With tears in both of their eyes, Chad slid the ring onto her finger and knew that this would be a moment he would remember forever.

Author's Note: I took this story specifically from Rama's Quest, which is a story of the Ramayana. My story is based off of Rama's childhood and his journey that he takes where he finds Sita, the love of his life. He knows that he has to get Sita's father's approval to marry her by bending Shiva's bow, so in my story I changed it to Chad needing to prove himself to his crush's dad before asking her out on a date; a more modern twist to the story.

  1. Hey Hannah! I love how you put a modern twist on the story of Rama and his quest to get Sita. I think it makes it more relatable to our lives and our time in general. I think your use of extra details to make the story more interesting was great, and I appreciate giving the story a happy ending as well! Overall, i really enjoyed reading it, great job!

  2. Hi Hannah~
I really liked your modern retelling of Rama and Sita's courting period. When I was initially reading the source material I didn't catch some of the details, so your story helped me gain a better understanding of the overall feel of their relationship. The only thing I might recommend is to make the beginning a bit more concise, it took me a while to figure out was going on. Thanks for writing, I enjoyed going through Chad and Katie's story!
