Reading Notes: Sita Sings the Blues

Sita sings the blues was an awesome movie that captured the story of the Ramayana from Sita's perspective, as well as explaining details of certain situations, and twisting the story into a modern version. There were three components of the movie, and each would rotate for roughly a few minutes each time.

3 components:
- Three narrators explain and discuss what they know about what happened during the Ramayana. They discuss the details to determine the correct story, what exactly happened at what point, and what they think about certain aspects of the story. While they discuss, there are illustrations being acted out simultaneously, which creates an image of what they are discussing

-At certain points in the story, the narrators would disappear and music would start playing. From here Sita would appear as a cartoon character as well, however different from the one of the narrators. She would sing blues as she explained the plot of the story, like a musical. During these parts, it was usually Sita being sad, like when she's waiting for Rama to come back with the deer, when she is being held hostage by Ravana, when Rama doesn't want her back, etc.

-The last component of the story was of Nina and Dave, a couple who lives in San Francisco, and seemingly happy at the beginning. However, Dave gets a job in India and leaves Nina in California. They stay together, and when his contract gets extended, Nina moves to India to be with him. However, Dave doesn't seem so happy about it and when Nina leaves for a meeting in New York, he tells her not to come back. Nina is sad for a very long time, begging Dave to take her back, but ends up loving her home in New York. This is a modern version of the story of Rama and Sita.

Aside from these components, the movie starts with Lakshmi rising from the sea, dancing to music, and ends with Lakshmi, Chandra, and Vishnu rubbing Lakshmi's feet.
