Week 3 Story: Sita and Rama

Rama and Lakshmana were bored. They wanted to go out and explore the city more than anything, so with the hermit's permission, the boys hit the town. They decided that the market would be a good place to start because there were bound to be tons of cute girls shopping with their friends. As they approached the market, they saw people of all different shapes and sizes. They saw newly wed couples, children playing tag, old women buying groceries, and young women shopping for jewelry and sarees. The market seemed to be endless, with rows and rows of different types of goods.

Rama and Lakshmana wandered around for what seemed like a lifetime, when they saw two men; one playing a flute and one playing tablas. There was a crowd circling around the two men, people of all different castes drawn to the music that filled the streets. Rama and Lakshmana watched until the sun set, and then made their way back to the hermit and went to sleep.

The next morning, the brothers woke up and took a bath. During breakfast, they asked the hermit if they could go to town again. He was so excited that the brothers loved his town and told them about a beautiful garden that they should go to. The two brothers promised the hermit they would go to the garden, and twenty minutes later they were on the road again.

They knew they had arrived at the garden when they saw the glass like lake swarming with swans and water lilies. The garden was filled with bushes of all types of flowers, hummingbirds were hovering over honeysuckle and giraffes snacked on the tops of the tall trees. The brothers began skipping rocks on the water when they noticed a group of girls picking at the jasmine flowers. Rama noticed that one of the girls had the most extravagant henna growing up her arm from her wrist, and the lavender saree that wrapped her body. She was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen, and decided to introduce himself.

Sita saw the brothers as well, and loved the way Rama's hair swooshed so effortlessly. She wanted to come up with a way to run into him, but her friends were eager to leave for lunch. She reluctantly agreed, but Rama remained on her mind. She turned to her best friend and asked what she she should do. She told her that if it was meant to be, they would meet again. She prayed that she was right.

That night, Rama and Lakshmana went to bed, and Rama confessed his feelings for Sita. Lakshmana told him that if he prayed, then maybe his path would cross with Sita again. So before falling asleep, Rama did just that.

Author's Note: The plot of the original story of Rama and Sita falling in love is pretty similar to mine, with some description and scenery differences.

  2. Hey Hannah! What a sweet and well written story. You have quite a knack for painting scenes and imagery! I particularly loved the description of "the glass like lake swarming with swans and water lilies." I also liked that you included the response of both Rama and Sita first noticing each other. It was a great way to inform the reader that there is more to the story while humanizing the characters. I'm looking forward to reading more of your posts!

  3. Hi Hannah! First of all, the way you use descriptive imagery is amazing. I know sometimes giving something so much depth and character in a few paragraphs can be difficult but you did a great job. I think you use the original stories to your advantage which works well and allows you to make a new story that flows effortlessly. I particularly love the sentence "and the lavender saree that wrapped her body" because you allow the reader to see that image and make it graceful at the same time, adding an essence of elegance to your story from this use of imagery.

  4. Hi Hannah,

I am a sucker for a cute romantic story. I love how pure and sweet Rama and Sita's encounter was. I like that you gave more detail to how Lak and Rama spent their day leading up to the meeting with Sita. The ending really left me wanting more information. How did they meet again? I really am curious. Over all, great story!
