Feedback Thoughts

The two articles that I read and found particularly interesting were "Why It's So Hard to Hear Negative Feedback" and "Seven Ways to Crush Self-Doubt in Creative Work". I found that these articles not only relate heavily to the Growth Mindset articles and assignment we did last week, bu they supplement the idea with more ways to help incorporate Growth Mindset into work, school, and everyday life.

The main idea of each of the articles is simple to see. Failure sucks. No one likes it, and everyone is afraid of it. It doesn't feel good to fail or even to be short of perfection in some cases. But with all of these articles it was also easy to see that the authors were arguing that failure is not always bad. It can be really hard to take but in the long run, making mistakes (if you take them in the right way and improve from them) actually help you learn SO much. We have it wired into our brains that perfection is good and failure is bad, and we often compete with each other to get ahead of one another, because it makes you feel good to be the best, right? But what I found so intriguing about the Why It's So Hard to Hear Negative Feedback article is that we are not good at receiving negative feedback because we're not really that great at giving it either. It's hard to give the right impression when giving negative feedback because you don't want to hurt someone's feelings but you also really need to get your point across without being mean. I think that trying hard to incorporate these ideas into every day lives would eventually help everyone not only be more successful, but it would greatly reduce the amount of self-doubt that most people feel on a regular basis.

  1. Hi Hannah! I really appreciated your take on failure and how our brains process it! Failure does suck and it hurts to know that someone, especially someone you respect, doesn't think you did the best job. Overall, I love your post and I found it super informational. The bit about how we do not like negative feedback because we too are bad at giving it really hit me hard.
